Welcome to SO Counselling

Need someone to talk to? I'm here to listen and support you

Hi, I’m Stephanie O’Dell, a trauma-informed integrative counsellor with extensive experience supporting adults through distressing, overwhelming and difficult periods in their lives. Reaching out for counselling can feel like a significant step, so my aim is to offer you a warm, respectful space where you can feel heard, understood and accepted.

You do not need to have everything worked out before getting in touch. You may know exactly what you would like support with, or you may simply feel that something is not right and want a safe place to begin making sense of it. Our first contact can give you an opportunity to ask questions, share what has brought you to counselling and consider whether working together feels right for you.

However you have found your way here, from our very first contact my aim is to help you feel as comfortable and safe as possible. As a qualified and experienced counsellor, I understand that beginning therapy can involve uncertainty, and I will meet you with warmth, sensitivity and respect.

Our work will be collaborative and shaped around you as an individual. I will not tell you what to do or expect you to move more quickly than feels manageable. Instead, we can gently explore your experiences, notice patterns and responses, and develop a deeper understanding of what you need, with your choices and boundaries respected throughout.

I offer a deeply relational and non-judgemental therapeutic space where you can explore what is happening for you without pressure or criticism. My approach is calm, warm and approachable, and the environment is relaxed so that trust can develop naturally and you can bring whatever feels important at your own pace.

Being trauma-informed means that I pay close attention to safety, trust, choice and your individual responses. We will work in a way that seeks to avoid overwhelm and supports you to remain connected to the present. You will always be encouraged to notice what feels comfortable, to ask questions and to say if something does not feel right for you.

I have a deep passion for somatic therapy and take a holistic approach that recognises the connection between body and mind. Alongside talking therapy, we may gently explore physical sensations, breathing, movement and ways of feeling more grounded or contained. These approaches can support you in noticing and responding to the effects of stored trauma, and they will always be introduced sensitively and at a pace that feels manageable for you.

Counselling is not about forcing change or finding a quick answer. It can offer time to understand yourself more fully, recognise the ways past and present experiences affect you, and discover responses that feel more supportive. Some sessions may feel relieving, while others may bring difficult thoughts or feelings closer to the surface; we can approach these moments carefully and together.

Drawing on a range of therapeutic approaches—including creative therapies, somatic bodywork, movement alongside talking therapy—I will support you in exploring what feels most helpful for you. You can take this work at your own pace, with sessions available online from the comfort of your home or in person at my offices in the heart of Bath and Glastonbury. If something here resonates with you, you are welcome to get in touch to ask questions and take the next step when you feel ready.
